From 1-7 to 17th finals ...

"When I said na papasok kami sa finals tinawanan lang nila ako" - Mark Caguioa

How sweep it is for Barangay Ginebra.

The Kings got that and more following a 101-97 victory Sunday in their Smart PBA Fiesta Conference semifinal series before a fullhouse crowd of approximately 12,000 at the Araneta Coliseum.Barangay Ginebra came scrambling back from a six-point deficit in the closing minutes of regulation and then pulled out all stops in overtime to fashion the pulsating victory that enabled it to wrap up the best-of-seven series at four games to none.

"It's a big, big, big relief to get to the championships again," said Kings coach Jong Uichico after the win that seemed improbable for majority of regulation and then became inexorable right at the midway point of the extension when they took a 101-94 lead. The win extended the franchise streak record to 12 straight and, coincidentally, marks the 12th time in his coaching career that Uichico has made it to the finals, second with Barangay Ginebra. He said this one is made more memorable by the trials and tribulations they had to go through following a 0-5 start in the tournament.

In the end, the crowd favorite ran up their franchise winning streak record to 12 straight, a feat Uichico tried to downplay."We don't think about streaks. The players think about trying to do the best they can to win the game. They are here to win. It's our job to win every game possible," he stated.

"Hindi naging madali ito para sa Ginebra. We fought really hard to get where we are right now because Red Bull is so hard to read," he said."It's just that the breaks of the game went our way. They missed shots they usually make and we got the breaks at the right place, at the right time," he added.

The Kings now await the winner of the other semis pairing pitting Magnolia and Air21.

Mark Caguioa scored a game-high 33 points to lead all scorers. It was his fifth 30-plus point game in the tournament and 30th in the career of the 2001 Rookie of the Year, helping offset the low scoring game of teammate Jayjay Helterbrand and Chris Alexander, who combined for only 23 points.Alexander and Rafi Reavis, however, each had 19 rebounds for Ginebra with the seven-foot import adding seven blocks to tie the season-high set by Red Bull counterpart Adam Parada.Barangay Ginebra failed to win it outright in regulation but poured it all out in the extension by hitting its first four shots of the extra period and take a 101-94 lead, 2:31 left in the game.

Helterbrand, who went into the game with a 21.0 ppg average, was held to just 10 points but capped it with a jumper that started a 6-0 windup by Barangay Ginebra that tied it at 90.

Helterbrand, the Best Player of the Game in the first three games of the series, almost became the goat, however, after the Kings regained possession in the last 15.3 seconds of regulation, dribbling away most of the seconds before putting up a jumper that fell way short against Baguio's defense. PacMan Vs. Golden Boy

MMA or particularly the UFC have been beating the hell out of boxing for years now, well at least the last two and a half years. America's heavyweights are gone, the Tyson's the Holyfield's and the Jones. But if theres some who is keeping boxing alive it's our own Manny Pacquiao "the Mexicutioner" and the Golden Boy of boxing Oscar De La Hoya. And if this two boxing greats would meet in the same ring it would be the great for boxing for the filipinos and for both fighters. For Dela Hoya, to end his career with a bang againts the World no.1 Pound for Pound , and specially for the Pacman, if he wins he can preserve his name in the record books as one of the greats.

Please Bob make this happen !!!

CEBU CITY -- Close Pacquiao associate Rex 'Wakee' Salud says that the previously fantasy-like pairing of the Golden Boy Oscar de la Hoya and current pound-for-pound king Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao is close to reality.

Salud, Pacquiao and party arrived in Cebu yesterday afternoon via a chopper from Bacolod City after Pacquiao's sorties to Iloilo and Bacolod to honor his promise to give aid to victims badly hit by a recent typhoon.

Salud informed that Pacquiao is leaving for the U.S. on the 24th of this month where he is going to sit down with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, trainer Freddie Roach and possibly Golden Boy people to discuss the possibility of a Dec. 6 fight with de la Hoya.

Arum, in an earlier radio interview with journalist Dennis Principe over DZSR, revealed that he had preliminary discussions with the Golden Boy people on the possibility of a De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight and that De La Hoya is looking at four names for his farewell fight on Dec. 6 and these are Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Felix Tito Trinidad, Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao. Because Mayweather has recently retired and Trinidad is hugely overweight, that leaves Cotto and Pacquiao as the remaining choices.

Cotto will be fighting the dangerous Antonio Margarito on July 26 and the result of that fight will most likely also influence De La Hoya's final choice of his Dec. 6 opponent.

Commenting on the proposed Pacquiao-Soto fight on Nov. 16, Salud said "No, we do not want that fight. What we need now are the big fights. Let Manny fight De La Hoya now and then Hatton afterwards. After that, if Manny wants to retire, then he can retire."

If the fantasy-like De La Hoya-Pacquiao fight pushes thru, the two will meet at welterweight limit of 147 lbs.

De La Hoya (39-5-0 30KOs), 35 years old, 5' 10 1/2 inches tall, a gold-medalist in the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, started his professional career at super featherweight (130 lbs) but had fought at junior middleweight and middleweight (154-160 lbs) since 2001. He is the only boxer in history to have won titles in 6 different weight divisions.

Pacquiao (47-3-2 35KOs), 29 yearls old, 5' 6" tall, started his career in 1995 at light flyweight (106 lbs) and fought mostly as a flyweight (112 lbs) in his early years. He started fighting at super bantam (122 lbs) in 1999, featherweight (126 lbs) in 2003, super feather (130 lbs) in 2005 and at lightweight (135 lbs) only last month. Pacquiao is one of only nine boxers in history to have won titles in four weight divisions. He also won the Ring Magazine title, his fifth, at super feather but that title is not officially recognized.

The weight and height disparity between De La Hoya and Pacquiao were what made this fight unthinkable and unimaginable at first. But don't tell that to Freddie Roach, the revered 2-time trainer of the year who was able to transform the reckless, one-dimentional, always come forward Pacquiao to a two-handed, cerebral wrecking machine. Roach also trained De La Hoya during Oscar's fight with Mayweather last year.

“When I trained Oscar he was just having trouble pulling the trigger and he’s a little bit slow. If Stevie Forbes can hit him as easily as he did, I know Pacquiao will knock him out,“ Roach told Sports Chat in an earlier interview.

“I want Manny to weigh-in 140 pounds and then at fight time he’ll be at 145 he’ll have his power and speed. I just don’t see Oscar handling Manny at this point of their careers,“ Roach would say. “Manny told me he’d love to fight Oscar and Oscar has made it public he’d love to fight Manny and I think it’s a big, big fight.”

Detroit Rock City is a 1999 cult film about four teenagers in a Kiss cover band who try to see their idols in Detroit in 1978. It takes its title from the Kiss song of the same name. The movie failed at the box office, grossing fewer than five million dollars domestically. It has since become a cult classic for Kiss fans and metalheads in general. It has been often compared to the 1993 film Dazed and Confused.

The new 3G iPhone may seem cheaper at the onset, but the catch here is the bundled plan that goes along with it. Gizmodo has come up with a comparative table of what the new iPhone will really cost you on an AT&T plan. Surpisingly (or not), it’s actually more expensive than the first one albeit just being a hundred or so despite having a lower unit selling price.

On the local front, although nothing’s certain yet, Yugatech via a reliable source has come up with the possible pricing scheme for the iPhone. It comes as no surprise that a 2-year lock-in period is required and higher end plans will have the privilege of getting the Apple mobile phone at a cheaper price (if not free), but the kicker here is that it’s only the 8GB model being discussed here.

G-Max 3500 iPhone 3G
Initial Fee: Php9,995
Monthly Fee: Php3,500
Free Text: 650
Free Calls: 750 mins.
Globe to Globe: Php3.50/minute
Globe to Non-Globe: Php4.50/minute
Excess SMS Rates: Php0.50/text

Globe Platinum 5000 iPhone 3G
Initial Fee: FREE
Monthly Fee: Php5,000
Free Text: 650
Free Calls: 1,100 mins.
Globe to Globe: Php3.50/minute
Globe to Non-Globe: Php4.50/minute
Excess SMS Rates: Php0.50/text

If you do the math, you’ll actually be spending P 93,995.00 for an 8GB iPhone on the G-Max 3500 plan, and P 120,000.00 on the Platinum spread over two years. The prepaid kit isn’t looking too enticing either as Vodafone’s unit-only price of the iPhone gives us a hint into the possible price range in the local market. Unfortunately, Apple is also implementing a new mandatory in-store activation policy which means you’d have to go to authorized telco distributors to have it activated. This greatly reduces the chances of getting an iPhone in the black market at a cheaper price. Sheesh! The 3G iPhone is starting to look more less-affordable by the minute. September is the supposed roll-out date of these new iPhone-based plans so by then, we can probably get a clearer picture of what it’ll really cost us.

The iPhone is undeniably a hot commodity, but I’m hoping (probably against all odds) that Globe or any telco for that manner will not use it to bait consumers into getting plans that just aren’t worth it.

iPhone and App Store: Pushing for better data plansAfter all, current plans put a premium on SMS and calls while the biggest asset the iPhone its data usage. Telcos should offer a more impressive data plans that not only is consumer-friendly, but reliable and sound as well. With the entry of the iPhone into the local market, now is the perfect opportunity to push for data plans which has taken a back seat to cheaper call and text rates primarily due to the lack of a device that can truly maximize the usage of such a service. This, in turn, will be an added source of revenue considering how under-used it has been for the last couple of years.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Globe officials will realize this and make a concerted effort to improve on the existing 3G/data usage scheme and make the iPhone more affordable, not just for the well-off crowd, but more so for the greater majority. After all, isn’t it Steve’s dream to have everyone use the iPhone?
